After different material selection and casting processes, wheel hubs can be divided into the following categories:
Iron Hub
The manufacturing process of iron wheels is simple, the cost is relatively low, and the metal has strong fatigue resistance. It is the first choice for low-cost wheels. However, due to its relatively bulky appearance, large inertial resistance, poor heat dissipation performance, and easy rust and corrosion, iron wheels were only widely used in the initial stage of wheel hub development. In the 21st century, people's requirements for automobile quality have gradually increased, automobile production has gradually shifted to mid-to-high-end, and competition for advantages in the automobile market has continued to intensify. Iron wheels have gradually withdrawn from the automobile parts market and become a mark of history. In today's market, it is difficult for us to see iron wheels. The fundamental reason lies in the advancement of productivity, and backward wheel hubs have been eliminated.
Cast wheels
Compared with iron wheels, cast wheels are the product of improved productivity. In the development process of wheel hubs, cast wheels have achieved a major leap forward from traditional wheel hub production. They use a variety of casting processes to maximize strengths and avoid weaknesses to achieve the transformation and upgrading of the wheel hub industry. There are many manufacturing processes for cast wheels. Currently, there are three main types: gravity casting, low-pressure casting, and spin casting. Each of the three processes has its own strengths and corresponding shortcomings. Currently, most of the original aluminum alloy wheels of models on the market use the process of low-pressure casting, which also benefits from the outstanding advantages of low-pressure casting, such as good formability, clear outline, and uniform density.
Forged wheels
Forged wheels are a processing and forming method that uses a kiloton-level forging press to exert pressure on metal blanks to cause plastic deformation to obtain forgings with certain mechanical properties, shapes, and sizes. The current forged wheels are mainly divided into single-piece and multi-piece wheels. The two forms of wheel hubs provide different customer needs to varying degrees. Compared with the first two types of wheels, forged wheels have the advantages of modern technology. Of course, the advantages of wheel hub production also increase the production cost, and the manufacturing cost will naturally become higher.
After understanding the classification of wheel hubs, of course, we must mention the following things that car owners should pay attention to when modifying wheel hubs after selecting the wheel hub type:
One is to pay attention to the width, which is the "J value" of the wheel hub (in inches), which refers to the distance between the flanges on both sides of the wheel hub.
The second is to pay attention to the offset distance, that is, the "ET" of the wheel hub (unit: millimeter), which refers to the distance from the center line of the wheel hub to the mounting surface.
The third is to pay attention to the wheel hub hole spacing and hole position, that is, the "PCD" of the wheel hub, which refers to the diameter between the fixing bolts in the center of the wheel hub.
