Land Rover origins and driving tips

Today, the name 'Range Rover' refers to Jaguar Land Rover's luxury SUV brand, which has four models in its line-up: the top-of-the-range Range Rover, plus the Sport, Velar and Evoque family models.

The first Range Rover was the vehicle that not only made the name synonymous with luxury SUVs, but also created the luxury SUV genre itself.

1. Off-road performance and luxury saloon comfort.

The first Range Rover made its debut in 1970 as a new Land Rover branded vehicle, responsible for off-road 4WD within British Leyland (BL), which also owns Rover.

The Range Rover was developed as 'a vehicle that combines off-road performance with the comfort of a luxury saloon'. The Range Rover was soon back in the limelight with back orders. So who wanted the first Range Rover? Here are the clues that led to the luxury SUV brand we know today.

The answer is 'the upper classes': Britain's high society bought them for camping, hunting and horse-riding, and some even went on transcontinental adventures.

Incidentally, the Mercedes-Benz Geländevägen (today's G-Class), which debuted in 1979, is said to have been born as a result of the Range Rover's success.

2. Production period of the first Range Rover, 26 years.

The Range Rover debuted with a 3.5-litre V8 engine and four-speed manual transmission powertrain and a two-door body, and in the 1980s a four-door body and automatic transmission were added.

3. History of Range Rover Evoque up to its birth

Range Rover Evoque was born in 2011. Its birth was largely due to Land Rover's flagship model, the Range Rover. First, let's take a look at the history of the Range Rover and how the Range Rover Evoque was born.

1969: The original Range Rover is born

The history of the Range Rover began in 1969. Twenty-six prototypes of the first Range Rover are built. To keep the information secret, they were given the name 'VELAR', which means veil or cover in Italian, and all prototypes were fitted with a 'VELAR' badge.

The 'VELAR' name didn't end with the prototypes: after 48 years, the car was reintroduced in 2017 as the Range Rover Velar.

1994: Second generation with increased luxury

The first full model change took place in 1994, 24 years after the introduction of the first generation Range Rover. While inheriting the design of the first generation Range Rover, the design was updated, with the headlights changing from round to square.

However, the 'RANGE ROVER' written on the clamshell bonnet, which is linked to the current Range Rover, was firmly carried over to the second generation, which also has a nickname for the second generation Range Rover, known as the P38 series or Second Range.

2001: The third generation, a major evolution

The model change to the third generation came after seven years, shorter than the previous cycle: the third generation Range Rover, launched in 2001, featured a single-shell monocoque body.

The body design was inspired by the speedboats of Italian boat manufacturer Riva. The interior also featured a metallic finish inspired by the equipment on luxury yachts.

The third generation era saw the creation of the Range Stormer concept car in 2004 and the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover's first sports SUV, in 2005. Then, in 2008, the LRX concept car was launched, which was followed by the Range Rover Evoque.

2011: Debut of the first Range Rover Evoque.
The first Range Rover Evoque, a faithful reflection of the LRX concept car, is presented at the 2010 Paris Motor Show and makes its debut the following year in 2011.

At the Paris Motor Show, the coupe style, which sets it apart from previous SUVs, was a major talking point. Another key feature is its compact size, which makes it easy to handle.

In 2015, the Range Rover Evoque Convertible, a novel convertible model for an SUV, was launched.

2019: Second generation Range Rover Evoque launched
The second generation Range Rover Evoque was launched in the UK in 2018 and went on sale in Japan in 2019.

It inherits the Range Rover Evoque's signature coupe style, but with a more stylish and modern design.

The second generation also features Range Rover's first mild hybrid system. Mild hybrid is available on both petrol and diesel models.
