Wheel modification is the most popular item in car modification, but it is also the item with the most misunderstandings and the highest violation rate. Many car owners blindly follow the trend of upsizing, pursue Internet celebrity styles, and purchase low-priced and inferior products. Not only do they fail the annual inspection, but they also destroy the original balance of the vehicle, causing a series of problems such as soaring fuel consumption, poor control, and tire punctures and deformations. Only by mastering professional modification skills and avoiding common misunderstandings can you achieve safe, compliant and practical wheel upgrades.
First of all, we must strictly abide by modification regulations and prevent dimensional violations. This is the first rule of wheel modification and also the most easily overlooked misunderstanding. Domestic traffic regulations clearly stipulate that car wheel hub modifications must be consistent with the original factory size parameters. Only changes in appearance style, color, and craftsmanship are allowed. Increasing or reducing the wheel size without permission is illegal modification. It will not pass the annual inspection and will be punished by the traffic police when on the road. It may even affect vehicle accident claims. Some car owners blindly change the wheel hubs for visual effects, which not only violates the rules, but also causes the tire outer diameter deviation to exceed the standard, affecting the accuracy of vehicle speed data and posing safety risks.
Secondly, we must reject random parameter matching and ensure accurate data adaptation. Wheel modification is not universal, and the three core parameters of PCD pitch circle diameter, center hole size, and ET offset are indispensable. If the PCD parameters do not match, it cannot be installed normally. Forcible modification will cause the wheel hub to be unstable; the center hole size does not match, and the wheel hub will shake and run off during driving; the ET offset deviation will be too large, which will change the wheelbase and wear suspension and brake components. Long-term driving will damage the vehicle chassis. When refitting, you must strictly follow the original factory parameters when purchasing. Slight deviations will affect driving stability.
At the same time, we must abandon the misconception that "the bigger, the better, and the wider, the more stable". Many car owners blindly pursue large wheels and wide treads, ignoring the power and positioning of the model. Modifying small-displacement family cars with large-size wheels will increase the unsprung mass and rolling resistance, causing power loss and fuel consumption to soar. Fuel consumption per 100 kilometers can increase by 5%-10%, and the electric vehicle's battery life will be significantly reduced. The combination of thin tire walls will completely sacrifice the vibration filtering comfort. It is easy to cause wheel hub deformation and tire bulging when passing through speed bumps and potholes, which greatly increases vehicle costs and safety risks.
