What is the difference between single-sided swingarm and double-sided swingarm on a motorcycle?

Jul 12, 2024

Recently, there have been customers asking about the issue of the single-sided swingarm and double-sided swingarm of motorcycles. Today, let's take a look at the difference between a single-sided swingarm and a double-sided swingarm of motorcycle?

info-1-1

1. Different prices

Most household motorcycles or mid- and low-end motorcycles on the market use a double swing arm design. Because the structure is relatively simple, the manufacturing cost of the vehicle is lower, and the price of the motorcycle is relatively cheap, while the single swing arm is generally only installed on high-end, large-displacement motorcycles. The purchase threshold of this type of vehicle is relatively high, and it can easily cost hundreds of thousands or even millions of yuan.

2. Different conveniences in tire disassembly and assembly

Generally speaking, double-arm vehicles require the removal of the fixings on both sides to remove the wheels, which takes more time and effort. Single-arm vehicles were originally designed to cope with motorcycle competitions. To change tires, you only need to remove one side, which can save more time for motorcycle competitions and is more convenient for users to maintain the vehicle daily.

3. Different rigidity

Because the single swing arm was originally developed for competition, and the motorcycles participating in the competition are not only large in displacement and heavy in body, but also need to run at high speed for a long time, so the single swing arm has higher requirements in machining precision and material; and the double swing arm has stronger stability, so it does not put too much effort in material, so the body rigidity of the single swing arm model may be higher in the same level of models.

However, it should be noted that if the double rocker arm also uses the same material and manufacturing process, then the double rocker arm can have higher stability due to the symmetrical design.

4. Different weights

Because the single swing arm needs to use stronger materials and has a more complex structure, theoretically, the weight of a general single swing arm model will be heavier than that of a double swing arm, while the weight of a double swing arm model is often lighter. It should be noted that the above is about general motorcycles. Some professional racing cars are not general. Even if these cars use a single swing arm, they can still ensure that the body weight is not too heavy.
