Are Bigger Wheels Really Better?
Oct 29, 2024
First of all, the bigger the wheel, the better.
In the case of the same outside diameter of the tire, it is necessary to change the high flat ratio of the tire to change the big Rim, so that the lateral swing of the car is small, the car will be more stable, and the feeling of turning will be lighter. But the cost is that the shock absorption performance is greatly weakened, and a small bump will be clearly transmitted to the car, and the comfort will definitely be greatly reduced. In addition, the flat and thin tire resistance is relatively weak, especially when it encounters sharp objects, making it easy to damage.
For most people living in the city, the chance of drag racing is not much; if it is purely for the appearance of the wind, it feels a bit "silly". Generally speaking, it is most appropriate to increase one or two numbers according to the original wheel Rim.

Second, not all big wheels boost performance.
Many people think that big tires with wider wheels will improve performance, but this view is wrong. The size of the tire and Rim will directly affect the inertia of the wheel. If inertia increases, it affects both acceleration and braking. If you want to greatly improve the performance while increasing the Rim, you should try to choose a lighter Rim.
In particular, it should be noted that in the case of the same total mass of the wheel (Rim and tire), the larger the Rim, the worse the performance. For example, the weight of a 16-inch wheel is 30 pounds, and the weight of a 17-inch wheel is also 30 pounds. According to the general point of view, the weight is the same, and the inertia is the same. But this is not the case; 17-inch tires will be flatter, and the weight is more concentrated on the outside of the wheel. At high speed rotation, the inertia will be greater, and the performance will be reduced.
In this case, the performance of the 17-inch wheel will be lower than that of the 16-inch wheel. The only solution is to continue to reduce the weight of the entire wheel and choose lighter wheels.
Third, the shape of the wheel itself will also affect the performance of the car
If a Rim is shaped so that the weight is concentrated in the center of the Rim, then when the wheel rotates, the inertia generated is smaller; Conversely, if the weight of a Rim is concentrated on the outside of the Rim, the resulting inertia will be greater. Therefore, choose the Rim, not only to see the total weight of the Rim, but also to see where the weight is distributed; the farther the weight is from the center, the worse the performance.
Fourth, confirm the wheel Rim parameters before changing the wheel Rim
A Rim includes a lot of parameters, and each parameter will affect the use of the vehicle, so before modifying and maintaining the Rim, first confirm these parameters.
1. Rim size: in fact, it is the diameter of the Rim. We often hear people say 15-inch Rim, 16-inch Rim, such a statement, in which 15, 16 inches refer to the size of the Rim (diameter).
2. Rim width: Rim width is also commonly known as the J value, the width of the Rim directly affects the choice of tires, tires of the same size, the J value is different, the choice of tire flat ratio and width is different.
3. PCD and hole position: the professional name of PCD is called pitch circle diameter, refers to the diameter between the fixed bolts in the center of the Rim, the general Rim large porous position is 5 bolts and 4 bolts, and the distance of the bolts is also different, to 5X114.3 as an example, it represents the PCD of the Rim is 114.3mm, and the hole position is 5 bolts. In the choice of Rim, PCD is one of the most important parameters. For safety and stability concerns, it is best to choose the PCD and the original car Rim to upgrade.
4. Rim Offset: English is Offset, commonly known as the ET value, the distance between the Rim bolt fixed surface and the geometric center line (Rim cross-section center line). The popular point is that the Rim is indented or convex after modification. The ET value is positive for general cars and negative for a few vehicles and some jeeps. If the offset value of a car is 40, if the wheel Rim of the ET45 is replaced, it will be more visually shrunk into the wheel arch than the original wheel Rim. The ET value not only affects the visual change, but it will also be related to the steering characteristics of the vehicle and the wheel positioning Angle, and the deviation value with a large gap may lead to abnormal tire wear, easy bearing wear, or even normal installation.
In most cases, the same brand of the same style of wheel Rim will provide different ET values that can be selected. Before modification, to consider comprehensive factors, the safest case is not to modify the brake system under the premise of keeping the modified wheel Rim ET value and the original factory ET value.
5. Rim center hole: the center hole is used to fix the connection with the vehicle part, that is, the Rim center and Rim concentric circle position. Here, the diameter size affects whether we can install the Rim to ensure that the wheel geometric center can be consistent with the Rim geometric center. Although the Rim shifter can change the hole distance, this modification has risks and should be tried with caution.
If you don't know anything about changing the wheel Rim, it's best to find a professional to operate it; after all, compared with the dazzling appearance, safety is the top priority.
