International Oil Prices Stage A Major Reversal!

Mar 27, 2026

Following a sharp decline, international oil prices have staged a major reversal.

Amid lingering uncertainty regarding the prospects of negotiations between the United States and Iran, international oil prices surged significantly. According to a report by Cailian Press on March 27, the settlement price for May WTI crude oil futures closed at $94.48 per barrel-a gain of 4.61%-while the settlement price for May Brent crude oil futures closed at $108.01 per barrel, up 5.66%.

According to CCTV News, in the early hours of March 26 (local time), a Turkish oil tanker named the *ALTURA* was struck by a drone in the Black Sea, approximately 15 miles from the Istanbul Strait. Reports indicate that the tanker was en route from Russia to Turkey, carrying a cargo of 140,000 tons of crude oil at the time of the incident. The attack triggered a violent explosion, causing damage to the vessel's superstructure-including the bridge-and resulting in water ingress into the engine room.

Meanwhile, news regarding oil production cuts in Iraq continues to roil energy markets. Iraqi energy officials stated that, due to a *de facto* blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Iraq is currently unable to export crude oil through the waterway; facing a critical shortage of storage capacity, the country has been forced to curtail production. Consequently, output from Iraq's major southern oil fields has plummeted by 80%.

Compounding these difficulties, a series of incidents-including Ukrainian drone attacks, acts of sabotage against a vital oil pipeline, and the seizure of oil tankers-have temporarily disabled at least 40% of Russia's oil export capacity, thereby exacerbating market concerns regarding supply.

According to *The New York Times*, efforts by the United States and Iran to initiate negotiations are proceeding with great difficulty, as both sides insist that they hold the upper hand in the ongoing conflict. The U.S. has proposed a 15-point ceasefire agreement; however, Iran has rejected the American proposal and put forward its own conditions for a truce-including demands for financial reparations. Meanwhile, fearing that the war could come to an abrupt end, Israel is racing against time to conduct as many airstrikes as possible against targets within Iran.
