Nissan To Start Restructuring in Japan: Shonan Plant To Stop Production Of Commercial Van “AD”, Layoff Hundreds Of Employees
Jan 21, 2025
The Shonan plant, which produces the commercial van "AD", will cease production in November this year. Nissan informed its business partners of this policy earlier this month. Sales have been sluggish in recent years due to competition from rivals such as Toyota Motor Corporation.
The plant, which has an annual capacity of 150,000 units, currently produces the AD and NV200 models. The plant is also considering reducing production of the NV200.
Nissan plans to cut 3,000 jobs in direct departments, such as production, and 6,000 jobs in indirect departments, such as office worldwide in response to the company's slump. The Shonan plant will be included in the job cuts. In Japan, the focus will be on whether headquarters divisions will also be targeted for layoffs.
Nissan announced last December that it would be in talks with Honda about a business merger. However, to achieve this, "the implementation of Nissan's restructuring measures is necessary" (Honda President Toshihiro Mitsuishi), and work is currently being stepped up.
