Zhongyuan Festival

Aug 30, 2023

According to Chinese folk belief, during the seventh lunar month, the gates of the underworld open, and the ghosts of the departed return to the world of the living to seek food, entertainment, and offerings from their descendants. To appease these spirits and show respect to their ancestors, many Chinese people prepare special food and offer sacrifices, such as burning incense, joss paper, and other offerings.

Apart from these rituals, people also hold various activities, such as lighting lanterns, performing operas, and making offerings to the river and sea gods. These activities are meant to help the wandering souls find their way back to the afterlife and to seek blessings and protection for the living.
