Car wheels can be broadly classified into two types: steel wheels and aluminium wheels. Steel wheels, as the name suggests, are made of steel (iron) and are made by welding pressed rims and discs together.

Aluminium wheels are of two types: casting, in which an aluminium alloy is melted and injected into a mould, and forging, in which a lump of aluminium is crushed in a mould. Casting is the main type of aluminium wheel used in passenger cars, and there is a wide range of types, including wheels with elaborate designs and competition wheels with rims made using a rolling process to reduce weight.

For trucks, on the other hand, the mainstream is steel wheels. This is because, as cost and durability are priorities for commercial cargo, cheap and strong steel wheels are the first choice, while aluminium wheels are often an option or retrofit. This is because aluminium wheels on trucks need to be much stronger and more durable than those on passenger cars. This is because they are used in much harsher conditions. Just as the construction and shape of the tyre differs between passenger cars and trucks, the structure of the wheel is also optimised for trucks

Wheels are used in combination with tyres to decorate the undercarriage of a car. Most dress-up wheels are made of light alloys such as aluminium. There is a trend towards lightweight and rigid forged wheels and cast wheels with a high degree of freedom in design, but steel wheels are very rarely used for dress-up purposes anyway.

Steel wheels, sometimes referred to as 'iron-penny wheels', are available with a more sophisticated disc surface design, but due to the difference in materials, they are press-formed from thinner sheets than aluminium wheels, making it difficult to create a thin spoke shape.

In addition, disc designs such as aluminium wheels are impractical when considering strength. They tend to have a rugged design. For this reason, most new cars have steel wheels with plastic caps. This situation has also led to the perception that steel wheels should be concealed as standard, and that they are not suitable for dressing up.

Such manufacturing constraints and market perceptions have kept steel wheels from being a dress-up item. However, some dress-up items are only possible with steel wheels. This is what is known as 'wide processing'.

The customisation of a wheel by cutting the rim at the parallel surface of the disc, dividing the wheel into sections and adding and welding steel plates between them to freely create wheels of sizes not available on the market is called 'wide modification'. The idea has been around for quite some time, and has attracted the most attention in recent years due to the revival movement. The appeal of craftsman wide modifications is that they can achieve unimaginably deep rims and rim widths that match the size of the wings.
