Do's and Don'ts of Truck Driving
Is driving a large truck scary?
Even if you normally drive a light car or a standard car, you may feel intimidated by the prospect of suddenly driving a large truck. However, if you understand the key points of driving a large truck, you will naturally ease your fear of driving a large truck.
Here are some of the points that tend to make driving a large truck scary.

1. Because they are significantly larger than standard cars.
Firstly, the biggest difference between a large truck and a standard car is the size of the vehicle itself. Large trucks are wider, taller and longer, and there are several situations in which driving them in the same way as a normal car can be extremely dangerous. In particular, the increased difference between the inside wheels due to their long overall length is a factor that can easily cause accidents such as entrapment or contact when turning left or right. Care must also be taken when backing into a vehicle when parking or entering, as the longer overall length changes the timing of the turnaround.
Furthermore, even when just driving on the road, if you do not have a sense of the full width of a large truck, it can cause accidents such as collisions or accidents due to unreasonable widths. It is essential to have a clear understanding and be aware of the size of a large truck.
2. More blind spots than a standard car.
One of the key points to be aware of when driving or stopping a large truck is that there are more 'blind spots' than in a standard vehicle that cannot be seen from the driver's seat. Two of the most dangerous and unique blind spots for large trucks are at the front and sides of the vehicle.
In the front, the driver's seat is higher because of the vehicle's height, making it easier to see the road conditions. On the other hand, the immediate vicinity of the vehicle body is a blind spot and cannot be seen. The side mirrors allow some visibility, but they are not perfect, so be careful, especially when starting off.
The right side of the vehicle is the driver's side, so it is possible to look out of the window to check. However, this is not possible on the left side in many situations. In particular, a cyclist or motorcyclist who slides past you may not be able to see you in the side mirror and turn left, resulting in an accident. When turning left, check your surroundings more carefully before turning.

Key points for safe driving of heavy trucks
Even when driving a standard vehicle, there are a number of points to be aware of to ensure safe driving. In addition to this, when driving a large truck, you must be aware of the points to be careful of that are specific to large trucks. Be aware that there are a number of situations where driving a heavy truck in the same way as a standard vehicle can be dangerous not only for you, but also for other vehicles, pedestrians and others.
1. The law of inertia comes into play due to the vehicle's heavy weight!
When driving a heavy truck, the total weight is heavier, partly due to the load. In this condition, the so-called 'law of inertia' works more strongly than in a normal car. This means that it is not possible to slow down or stop immediately, and braking with the sensations of a normal car is dangerous. It is advisable to decelerate as soon as possible and, in some cases, use auxiliary brakes such as exhaust brakes or air brakes.
However, as auxiliary brakes are powerful control devices, they can be dangerous when not carrying a load. Always be aware of the total weight of the truck you are driving.
2. Susceptible to crosswinds
Heavy trucks are susceptible to strong winds and gusts. Not only in bad weather, such as typhoons and snow storms, but even in good weather, unexpected gusts of wind can blow over bridges and along the sea. The 'instantaneous wind speed', which is often featured in news and weather forecasts, is about 1.5 times stronger than the average wind speed, and this increases to about three times if atmospheric conditions are unstable.
Aluminium vans with an overall length of 12 m and empty cargo are particularly susceptible to strong winds and gusts. Large trucks with a long overall length and a relatively light total weight are more likely to overturn in winds due to their higher centre of gravity.
To avoid rollovers, drive as slowly as possible, keeping a firm grip on the steering wheel and trying to keep the vehicle balanced. If the weather is bad and the wind is strong, consider waiting until the weather improves. As well as overturning, there is also the risk of collisions with flying signs and parts of roofs.
