Surface treatment processing methods and applications.
1. Plating (wet plating)
Plating (wet plating) is a type of surface treatment process whereby a thin film of metal is coated onto the surface of a metallic or non-metallic object.
Electroplating uses electricity to generate a redox reaction. Electroless plating uses a chemical reaction to deposit the plating.
Uses
- Decorative plating improves the appearance of materials.
- Anticorrosive plating prevents materials from rusting.
- Functional plating is used to add functionality to electronic components and equipment.
- Plating on metals improves abrasion resistance. It can also impart sliding and release properties.

2. Painting
Painting is a type of surface treatment process in which a liquid, powder or spray material is applied to the surface of an object to improve its appearance or protect it.
Unlike plating, it can be applied at room temperature and under atmospheric conditions and can therefore be applied to a wide range of materials, including concrete, metal and plastics.
However, care must be taken as it is less likely to form a strong film than plating.

3. Coatings
Coatings are surface treatment methods that utilise paint application methods to add functionality and value to production equipment and, in some cases, production products.
Typically, shot blasting or sand blasting is used to provide an anchoring effect to the substrate, and in some cases plating is applied.
Coatings are formed on these uneven or micro-cracked surfaces by applying fluoropolymers, silicon-based, ceramic or PEEK materials by powder or liquid coating and baking at high temperatures. In an increasing number of cases, coatings are applied to precision parts and delicate parts where high temperatures cannot be applied without damaging the base material, using polymerisation reactions or plasma pre-treatment instead of conventional surface preparation and high-temperature sintering.

4. Anodic oxidation treatment
Anodic oxidation treatment is commonly known as anodising. This surface treatment process involves electrolytic treatment of aluminium to produce an oxide film on the surface.
As aluminium easily bonds with oxygen, a thin oxide film is originally formed, but this film may cease to function in certain environments. Anodising is therefore used for its higher durability, wear resistance, water repellency and electrical insulation properties.
Uses
- Decorative effect (e.g. on fine writing instruments, metal tableware, bicycle and camera parts).
- Improved corrosion resistance (e.g. surface treatment of military and aircraft parts).
- Improved mechanical properties (e.g. reduced coefficient of friction, improved electrical insulation).
- Corrosion-resistant treatment of medical tools, electronic components, etc.

5. Polishing and shot peening
Polishing and shot peening is a type of surface treatment process that involves not merely coating or producing a film with a paint or material, but also cleaning, polishing, blasting or shot peening the surface to modify it.
Uses
- Polishing is used where an improvement in appearance or functionality is required, such as mirror finishing or improved slipperiness.
- Shot peening, on the other hand, is often used for parts requiring high strength, such as machine parts, automotive parts and aircraft parts, to improve fatigue strength and wear resistance.
- Shot blasting is also sometimes used for surface cleaning and surface preparation.

6. Thermal spraying
Thermal spraying is a type of surface treatment process in which a material called a thermal spraying agent is sprayed onto the workpiece to form a coating. In this technique, metals, ceramics, plastics and cermets are heated to a molten or near-molten state and sprayed onto the workpiece. The particles are then solidified and adhered to form a coating.
Thermal spraying is also used for surface treatment of large structures such as bridges and pylons, as it is relatively easy to form thick coatings and can be applied on-site.
Uses
- Protects materials against external factors such as abrasion, corrosion and heat.
- Also used for repairing parts and machinery. Worn parts can be repaired with thermal spray coatings to extend the service life of components.
- Highly functional coatings can improve the performance of machine and engine parts. For example, it can improve the combustion efficiency of combustion appliances and the fuel consumption of automobile engines.
- It can also be used for painting in place of paint. Thermal spray coatings adhere better than paint and are more resistant to abrasion and corrosion, which is why they are also used to paint bridges, railway vehicles and large buildings.
