In Response To Trump Tariffs, Honda Shifts Civic HV Domestic Production in Japan To The U.S.

Apr 17, 2025

Japan's Honda announced on June 16 that it plans to shift some of its stateside production of Civic Hybrid Vehicle (HV) models to the United States. Production will be shifted to the U.S. plant in Indiana after June or July to avoid the impact of the Trump administration's tariff policy.

The Civic is one of the best-selling cars in the United States. The model being transferred to the U.S. is the Civic Hybrid five-door hatchback, which began production at the Saitama plant (Yorii-machi, Saitama Prefecture) in February, and about 3,000 units have been produced as of March.

A Honda spokesman in Japan said that production of the car at the Yorii plant "is expected to end in June or July," but that the start of production at the Indiana plant "has not yet been determined.

The Civic lineup for the U.S. market, which is built at Yorozuya, includes a five-door model as well as a sports car, the Civic Type R. The Type R will continue to be built exclusively at Yorozuya. The Type R will continue to be built entirely at Host and will be supplied to the rest of the world, including the United States.
